A CR1 visa, is an immigrant visa issued to an alien who is married to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and wishes to live in the U.S. with their spouse. For purposes of this visa, a spouse is a legally wedded husband or wife. This includes same sex couples.
The CR in CR1 stands for “Conditional Resident.” CR1 Visas entitle their holder to receive "Conditional" Permanent Residency within the United States for a period of 2 years. The reason why the person granted this type of visa becomes a "Conditional Resident" is because this visa is only provided to couples who have been married for less than 2 years. A CR1 Visa will result in the applicant obtaining "conditional" permanent residency within the US and after a period of two years, the applicant can apply to "Remove Conditions" 90 days before the conditional permanent resident card expires and they will be issued a regular 10 year Green Card.
